Playing sounds backwards has two main audible effects: 1. Most naturally occurring musical instrument sounds have a sharp attack and a slow release or decay time, and this is reversed. This produces a characteristic ‘rushing’ sound or ‘squashed’ feel, since the main rhythmic information is on the beats and these are now at the end of the notes. 2. Any reverberation becomes part of the start of the sound, whilst the end of the sound is ‘dry ’. Echoes precede the notes which produced them. Both of these serve to reinforce the crescendo effect of the notes.
