Compounding the all-too-common human failing of procrastination is the fact that in prior courses students have generally been able to bail themselves out with all-nighters before final exams or paper deadlines. In the group project, only a small part of the progress is under the students' own direct control. This proves as frustrating for the compulsive planners as for the procrastinators, and has threatened the productivity of otherwise cordial working groups. The answer, more easily prescribed than executed, is to persuade the group to set up a realistic time line early in the course when objective evaluation is still possible.

Traditionally, the Geology Department's Short Term units are field-intensive and provide an ideal opportunity in which to implement a service-learning project. Senior theses have always been a part of the Bates geology degree. Geology's oldest theses date back to 1933. Even then some students chose what could now be construed as service-learning projects. Early examples of proto-service-learning projects would include "The Geology of Thorncrag" (a bird sanctuary) (1935) by Dorothy Randolph and John Albertini; "Survey of Opportunities for Women in the Field of Geology" (1950) by Dorothy Cotton; and "Water Problems in the Poland Quadrangle" (1965) by Curtis Talbot.

Beyond the standard bibliographic sources, students should be able to locate relevant technical reports and government documents published by federal, state, and local agencies/offices. To enhance writing skills. Students prepare and edit text, tables, and figures for the class report. To understand some of the state and local regulations related to specific enuironmental issues and how these regulations are applied. Students have little exposure to specific regulations and their implementation prior to this class.
