Examples of the resulting spectra are shown in Fig. 4. Attention is drawn to the spectrum, assigned to C ( u = 1). It has been stated35that this state is not observed in emission, due to fast predissociation. 36 Two-photon excitation leads to straightforward assignment: The structure shown in Fig. 4 agrees with calculated Franck-Condon factors and with band positions. These results and the fact that the spectrum is obtained only on excitation to the C(u= 1) state unambiguously determine the assignment.
