Example text

The daisy world example is helpful because it allows us to conceptualize the importance of biodiversity at some of the largest scales, in this case the entire earth system. Through these examples, we hopefully begin to gain a basic sense of how the interactions between the biosphere and other natural system components are impacted through the lens of biological diversity. We cannot spend too much time delving into the details of this topic, as it represents an entire discipline of study in itself.

Ecosystems should include all of the necessary parts or components of the system being analyzed, which, standing alone, can support all of the living things within the ecosystem. The largest ecosystem, arguably, is the earth itself. As mentioned earlier, James Lovelock proposed the earth is a self-regulating system when he formulated his Gaia hypothesis. The purpose of his argument was to suggest the earth, in many respects, acts much like a living thing. It maintains (regulates) life within a range of temperatures, pressures, and concentrations.

All of these values are important considerations when engaging in environmental decisions. Consider that when making environmental decisions, one needs to have a solid understanding of the background environmental factors at play. Natural systems give us the largest-scale picture of what those background environmental factors are in a particular instance. Included in ecosystem principles are two main points: the components of an ecosystem include both living and nonliving things, and the services provided by an ecosystem can be categorized into provisioning, regulating, and cultural services.
