As it snaked smoothly toward him through a nearly unbroken sea of trees, then flowed past The Depot and on into town. Hunter had been to Fort Mason several times in the past year to prepare for the Bridger Railroad case. Each time he visited he was struck by its isolation. It was a man-made island surrounded by that dense sea of trees. The thick woods were ringed by rugged mountains rising up five miles outside of town to the north, east and south. Mountains that formed an almost perfect semicircle around the town, if you looked down at them from above.

The rest of his team was probably strung out between here and that chute he’d just caught sight of. All of them were probably struggling down from trees as fast as they could because there was no way any of them could have made it to this tiny clearing. He hoped no one was hurt. ” Paul whirled around. Struggling to her feet a car length away was Mandy Winslow, the rookie Jumper. She’d been fourth off the plane. He hadn’t heard her land because his head was still plugged into his birdcage of a helmet.

As Strat climbed out of the truck, he slipped the cell phone into his jeans pocket. He wanted to hear from his younger brother for another reason, too. Hunter hadn’t sounded like himself when he’d called from his hotel room in Bozeman last night. The case had gone fine, but Hunter seemed preoccupied by something else, even down about it. And Hunter rarely got too emotional about anything. Strat had thrown one cast in the water during the call. A nonspecific “Everything okay, Hunt? ” near the end of it, but he hadn’t gotten a bite.
