She creased her brow. "Oh, probably. " "They're in the car, I'll go get them. Ben"—I grabbed a plastic shopping basket from the pile by the door— "here. Find some food. " He took the basket, looked at me quizzically, then headed for the shelves. Feeling like 1 was finally accomplishing something, I ran to the car, grabbed the bag of crosses, ran back to the store, and dropped the bag on the counter in front ofAlice . It landed with a solid, steely thunk. She pulled out one of the crosses, studied it, and looked increasingly worried.

I couldn't help it, though; I watched him closely. Meat looks different to a werewolf. I didn't used to be much of a meat eater at all. I used to be the kind of per-son who went to a steakhouse and ordered a salad. But after I was attacked, and I woke up and had a look at my first steak, so rare that it was bleeding all the way through—I could have swallowed the thing whole. I'd wanted to, and the thought had made me ill. It had been so strange, being hungry and nauseous at the same time. I'd almost burst into tears, because I'd realized that I was different, right through to the bones, and that my life would never be the same.

The thought of a challenge from Cormac made the wolf inside me cringe in terror. 1 couldn't fight Cormac. 1 looked away, hugging the blanket tightly around me. " Cormac said. " Finally, he said, "I was sixteen. I moved in with Ben and his folks after my dad died. " "Then Ben knew, too. " "Hard to say. I think Aunt Ellen was just as happy to leave it all behind.
