It should not be confused with airglow, a word sometimes used for the very faint luminescence ever-present in the night sky due to the Sun's radiation reflected from, or energising, particles both within and beyond the atmosphere. The cause of skyglow is nowadays well known: upward light from poorly designed lamps (Fig. 30), scattered and reflected by aerosols in the atmosphere, returns to the eyes of Earthbound observers, and in areas where this is permitted to occur, some or all of the detail of the night sky may be lost.

The fact that a 100 W bulb left burning though all the hours of darkness in a year causes about a quarter of a ton of carbon dioxide to be emitted by the power station gives pause for thought; and while the current trend is for the use of energysaving light fixtures within the home, it is certainly worth insisting to any agency encouraging this trend that they must not forget the lights outside the house, which can often be much brighter and more wasteful than any indoors.
