As the first systematic assessment of public acceptability of a nuclear waste repository, the results of the Texas research were something of a harbinger of things to come-an early warning signal of difficult social obstacles to the siting of a repository. Brody and Fleishman's principal discovery was a deep and widespread opposition to the repository, not only among Deaf Smith residents, as expected, but also, unexpectedly, among the residents of all the comparison communities. The third finalist site in the West was the Hanford Nuclear Reservation located on the Columbia River in the south central area of Washington State.
