A system conflict is present when r a useful action simultaneously causes a harmful effect, or r the introduction (intensification) of the useful action or the elimination (alleviation) of the harmful action causes an inadequacy, or an unacceptable complication of either one part or of the whole system. The solution of a problem associated with a system conflict can be attempted either by finding a trade-off between the contradictory demands, or by satisfying all of them.

Elimination of an auxiliary tool. Since most technological systems have at least one auxiliary tool, this rule is used very often. The first step in applying this rule is the formulation of the primary function of the system. Then, all major components should be listed and conflicting components identified.
