Whether true or fabricated, Macre’s testimony revealed that American emigration factored into the popular imagination, if not possible life strategies, of Monaghan Presbyterians. Emigration as a romanticized form of escape was a theme in a series of poems published locally by a printer named John Brown in the 1780s. This cheap chapbook literature was widely popular. The pamphlet consisted of three letters written by James MacSparran, an Anglican minister in Rhode Island, to friends in Ireland.

70 The title-page of America Dissected advertised the reasons for its printing. 72 Yet despite the negative images conjured up by the title-page, the pamphlet was not solely a polemic against migration. It also included useful information about the climate, demography and character of the various colonies. MacSparran admitted that those prepared to work could improve their lot in America. 74 Such objectivity was acceptable while annual migration remained steady. After the war Presbyterian emigration again began to rise to worrying levels.
