Previous models often made allocations based on implicit value choices. In the future, the selection of values should be open and transparent. In this way, the effect of changing values can be seen in the allocation scenarios. One point of continuing disagreement is cultural relativism. Although most voices in the working group called for an open and clear identification of the values incorporated in models, others argued that models are objective.

11. Communication Communication was agreed to be the critical factor in the success or failure of integrated studies. To achieve integrated environmental management, integrated modeling, integrated assessment, or integrated knowledge, communication is required. Communication among members of the scientific team is just as important (and challenging) as communication between modellers and stakeholders. Communication within the scientific community is required to advance the collective pool of knowledge as well as to encourage review and dialogue.

Consortium for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN) (1995) concludes that integrated assessment has a number of benefits including the ability to answer broad questions of how important the issue is and to assess potential responses to an issue. They suggest that integrated assessment can be used as a framework in which to structure present knowledge, helping to keep the entire problem in view and facilitating the search for possible responses. They maintain that this Ch. 2: The Potential for 1AM to Solve Environmental Problems 11 framework also provides a comprehensive structure for assembling, organizing, and communicating advances in knowledge as they occur and can help to structure uncertainty and sensitivity.
