For greater than 25 years, NSF acquired a pattern body for deciding on the objective inhabitants for info it accrued from the checklist of respondents to the decennial census long-form who indicated they'd earned a bachelors or larger degree. The likelihood that anyone was once sampled from this checklist was once depending on either demographic and employment features. yet, the resource for the pattern body will now not be on hand as the census long-form is being changed as of the 2010 census with the continual number of unique demographic and different details within the new American group Survey (ACS). on the request of NSF's technological know-how assets statistics department, the Committee on nationwide information of the nationwide study Council shaped a panel to behavior a workshop and examine the problems inquisitive about exchanging the decennial census long-form pattern with a pattern from the ACS to function the body for the data the NSF gathers. The workshop had the explicit goal of choosing matters for the gathering of box of measure info at the ACS in regards to pursuits, content material, statistical method, info caliber, and information items.

S. Department of Homeland Security but could not do so because individual records are considered confidential. Graduates from Non-S&E Fields The concept of “science and engineering” has evolved in NSF with respect to the SESTAT surveys. In the early history of the surveys, science and engineering was defined on the basis of the fields of science that were supported by NSF, with a focus on individuals with bachelor’s or higher THE SCIENTISTS AND ENGINEERS STATISTICAL DATA SYSTEM 21 degrees. In advance of the 1990s SESTAT redesign, one of the major recommendations from a National Research Council (1989) study was that NSF should cast a wider net with respect to the fields and occupations that were covered so that analysts could obtain a broader picture of the workforce.

8). S. institutions in S&E fields from the National Survey of Recent College Graduates (NSRCG) and the Survey of Earned Doctorates (SED) inevitably means that some population groups were missed. One population that is of great interest are the scientists and engineers whose degrees were all earned abroad. This population is captured in the sample only once a decade in the baseline survey. Foreign-educated scientists and engineers entering the United States after the decennial census and receiving no further degrees in the United States are not included in any SESTAT survey, so the undercoverage of this group grows throughout a decade.

Htm [accessed February 2008]. Over a decade, the ACS will survey approximately 30 million addresses; for comparison, 17 million housing units were surveyed by the long form at one time in the decennial census. A key function of the ACS is to produce estimates for various levels of geography (from small areas to the total nation) and other population groupings. To attain similar reliability to that provided for some of the small groups in the 2000 decennial census, the ACS estimates for the smallest areas or population groups must be based on data aggregated over 5 years.
