I have used the word here in that sense, thereby distinguish- Page 6 ing it from preservationism, the branch of the movement most closely identified with John Muir, which called for a complete (or as close to complete as possible) protection of specific areas for reasons unconnected with their future usefulness as economic resources.

Similarly, the terms conservation and preservation have acquired specialized meanings since the late nineteenth century. The word conservation first took on its generally understood meaningthe protection, management, and controlled use of natural resourcesaround 1875, and the conservation movement originally included both those who emphasized controlled use (such as Gifford Pinchot) and those who emphasized protection (such as John Muir).
