He compiled a list of 103 fuzzy objects (nébuleuse sans étoile, or starless nebulosities) in space in order not to mistake star clusters, galaxies, and nebulae for comets (for which he was searching). Fizeau also realized that the motion of a star affects its spectrum. BBC Science/Technology News - Mars' two-faced riddle 'solved' - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/7473128.stm - The puzzle of why the northern and southern hemispheres of Mars look so different may now have been solved. - Mars' crust is thicker in the southern hemisphere, and magnetic anomalies are found in the south but not the north. - New studies in Nature magazine suggest that a massive space rock smashing into the planet could have created an abrupt disparity between the two halves. - This asteroid would have been close to the size of Earth's moon and hit Mars' northern regions, scientists say. - 25 June 2008.

Geological evidence makes clear the site's extraterrestrial connection. The first website I reviewed was http://curious.astro.cornell.edu/comets.php and here is what I thought about it. Def. "[a] particle from 2 to 4 mm in diameter" [158] is called a granule. Meanwhile, ESA’s Asteroid Impact Monitor (AIM) craft will survey these... However, many of the NEAs have a darker, more de structive potential as well. Interestingly, certain bacteria, such as Deinococcus radiodurans, can survive a dose of nuclear radiation 3,000 times stronger than the dosage that would kill a human (32).

Radio astronomy studies radiation with wavelengths greater than approximately one millimeter. [43] Radio astronomy is different from most other forms of observational astronomy in that the observed radio waves can be treated as waves rather than as discrete photons. Here are some of the main showers, approximate dates, intensity estimates and the comets that are thought to have produced them. NASA's Stardust probe, which is bringing back samples of dust from the comet Wild 2, lends some support to Napier's idea.

At this temperature, metals and oxides can begin to form. Asteroids could provide new sources for the rare metals used in smartphones and computer chips. Bands of high-altitude clouds cast shadows on Neptune's lower cloud deck. Scientists believe an asteroid might have caused the extinction of the dinosaurs. Ah, there’s no place like home. - February 27th, 2008. Bill: No, recent data has virtually eliminated the chance of a collision. Then, a planet must meet these conditions: 1) it must revolve around a star, 2) it must be large enough so that gravity crushes it into a round shape, and 3) it must have cleared the area around its path of other objects in space.

Something as large as the one which exploded over Russia in 2013 is rare. More generally, the point in the sky where meteors from a specific shower seem to come from. Ida is exactly 2.861 astronomical units from the sun. The word comet comes from the Greek κομητης (kometes), which means “long-haired.” Indeed, it is the appearance of the bright coma that is the standard observational test for whether a newly discovered object is a comet or an asteroid.

Gr. 3-6+ The Planets in Our Solar System by Franklyn Branley. (Let's Read and Find Out Science) ISBN 006445178X. About 95% to 97% of the meteorites are of these type. All things considered, there seems to have been more hype and scare than straight facts. Meteors that originate from asteroids may have ultimately come from the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. They’ll even learn how these celestial bodies likely doomed the dinosaurs with these colorful, easy-to-read titles.

But the Deity had the decency to wait until the day after Christmas to begin fulfilling Jimi's prediction. Observation #2: A comet's ion tail is 4 AU long even when distant from the sun. The tail of the comet is always directed away from the sun. As the first spacecraft to accompany a comet as it enters our inner solar system, it'll observe at close range how the comet changes as it approaches the Sun.

In Charlie's hierarchical model of the Universe, he argued that the Universe has infinite mass, and that the density of matter approaches zero as one goes farther into space (resolving Olber's paradox ). Science did not receive the same degree of attention as mathematics, reading, writing, and religion, but science wasn't ignored either. Bad: Our Hero, Lily McKee (the head astronomer), is 29 years old, has a PhD, is director of a national observatory and has a 10 year old son.
