So she's sort of ethereal in this world. The younger cousins go back through the "gate" to retrieve the item that Emmeline had left. I'\''m sorry I cannot give my usual detailed synopsis---I went to the public library yesterday, and was heartbroken to find that they recently DISCARDED the last copy of this book (a hardcover in good shape!)for thirty miles in any direction. :-( Not hard to find in paperback (though clean copies are expensive) impossible to find in hardcover. The two become embroiled in an art heist when Marvin’s drawing is mistaken for James’s work.

A mysterious person comes and gives them a dial for the stove, and they use it to cook some recipes with magical results. She always took a bath after that. I received it from an english teacher as a gift, and he warned me that it was no longer in print (...but that was in 1982 so hey, maybe it's been back?). alas, I can recall only two of those stories since I didn't have it long enough to read much more. one story: a kindly, elderly couple live in an old apartment (?)and, I think, live in pretty meagre circumstance. they've befriended a child, and a day comes when they leave, exiting the apartment (and earth) via some secret country that is under a bed. as you can see, I barely recall the details, but I've a clear sort of image of the child lying on the floor, saying farewell to the people as they wave to her (?) from their beautiful, bright land. there might also be some sort of treasure they left behind for the child, but of that I am *totally* unsure. the other story I remember more clearly. an alien ship lands on a lawn/field (?) in a town. the aliens that come out are small, friendly, with distinctly large and pointed teeth. at first the townsfolk are afraid (I think, I don't recall that part), but eventually they realize that these creatures are no threat to them at all. it turns out that the aliens are in dire need of help: they are slowly starving to death. the townspeople respond to their plight, bringing them every kind of food they can think of, but the aliens cannot digest any of these offerings. helpless, the townspeople despair, and the alien people seem resigned to their plight. one of the aliens carries its crying infant out of the spacecraft, and when a person compassionately touches the baby, it bites him/her(?).

I checked E49 based on the comments and at first I didn't think it was the book. A moving story that won the 1971 Newbery Medal. by Rudyard Kipling, 1894, 258 pages, grades 4-7 (Illustrated by Jerry Pinkney, William Morrow and Co, 1995) Raised in Bombay, this famous writer turned fables about India into children's stories. The description sounds like my memory of the book. Virginia, Nick, Annabel and Dick find another road [to fairyland] and meet Bryony, Lord Tamus, Captain of the 1st Royal Company of the Enchanters ...

Mostly lists of authors, but one list describes each series briefly. When the boys solved the mystery (i.e., found the correct number), they placed their marker on the number and called out 'case solved'. Alice may not really exist, I can't remember. I found the Isaac Asimov book and indeed, it is the story entitled "Anniversary" that I have been looking for. Please go ahead and make up a keyword code for me, you may be able to do it best as this is all the information I have about this book.

This is a funny, funny book and the kids will be picking lines from it for a long time. She feels alone, and makes friends with a girl ghost from another time. Friends that Lady Jane makes include Madelon the praline-maker, her crippled daughter Pepsie, Madelon's twin sister Tante Modeste, Gex the old vegetable seller and Mam'selle Diane who makes woollen pen-wipers. The first suggested cover certainly matched my description and I looked at it over and over again, trying to make it be the right one, but it just wasn't quite it, the picture of Anne is a little more modern than I remembered, and a little too cheerful, the Anne I remembered on my book was a little more subdued, but thank you so much for trying, it looked exactly like what I had described overall.

The orange/brown color of the cover in this series makes me think that it might be the Animal Adventure Series. X is eventually found in a castle held captive by the letter M after running away because he felt neglected (Charley never used him). There are snowmen to be built, Christmas presents to be made, and a tree to be decorated. If anyone can track down the literature textbook it is in, that would help me solve an earlier book stumper I sent in about a boy named P.

There's The Recognitions and Mason & Dixon. It wasn't specifically a learn-to-read book, and we don't think it's Disney because Disney's had a fox as Robin Hood and the book we're looking for didn't. More about Ron Roy “I’m totally convinced that I am a writer today because I loved books as a kid.”—Ron RoyRon Roy is the author of the popular A to Z Mysteries series, as well as the Capital Mysteries series, and several picture books…. He also wrote Ghosts and More Ghosts, which may be the spooky book you are thinking of.

It begins with a little runt of a pig who is destined to be killed because he is so small. This is the type of book that engages kids so fully in the story that they won’t even know they’re learning. I saw this stumper and said, "I've read that book!" but I had no idea what it was called, either! Without a doubt, schools will move toward digital, which may begin to influence school age readers. Q7 Requester has both author and title- and date right.
