Amphibians can do some pretty amazing things with their skin. The animals may be active only in certain seasons and at favorable times of the day. This is one of the most aquatic snakes in Florida and looks awkward as it tries to move on land. Many specimen records are available online through web-based searchable databases accessible to scientists, resource managers, policy makers, and the public. A population of this species may eventually be located in southern Vermont, most likely along the Connecticut River drainage.

The ocean sunfish is the most massive bony fish in the world, up to 11 feet long, and weighing up to 5,070 pounds (Figure below ). Below are the lapbook pages you can print out and have your child complete to review the information we learned at co-op.

Poison dart frogs are very colorful, which helps them warn other animals not to eat them. This small snake is easily recognized by the broken orange ring around the neck. If the bacteria are absorbed into the blood from the intestine, they can infect other organs and the infection can become severe enough to cause death. It is only when we closely examine their anatomy that we see the distinction between these two classes of magnificent animals. This year, our Reptile Department and the American Association of Zoo Keepers organized its second annual “Croctoberfest.” All of this year’s proceeds with help benefit the slender-snouted crocodiles and future projects the San Diego Zoo has with the Abidjan Zoo.

Raccoons, foxes, skunks and opossums often eat snapping turtle eggs. Some, like the basilisk, can even run across the surface of water to escape. Other than the cottonmouth, the majority of fresh-water snakes in the United States are nonvenomous. Preservation of soft-bodied organisms is rare, and in this case seems to have occurred when the animals were rapidly buried in a mudslide down into deep, anaerobic waters, where there was little bacterial decay.

Like most infants, tadpoles are voracious eaters and require a constant supply of food. Unlike the exoskeleton of other phylums such as the arthropods, which must be shed periodically, this endoskeleton is permanent and can grow with the organism. Protection from drying out in the intertidal zone during low tides. One has three thin light stripes on a dark background while the other has a mainly light-colored shell with two thick dark stripes. Like most frogs, red eyed tree frogs feast upon bugs and insects.

Ironically--considering that they evolved over 300 million years ago and have survived, with various waxings and wanings, into modern times--amphibians are among the most threatened creatures on the earth today. The life history of the snapping turtle, however, like that of most of Ontario’s turtle species, is characterized by a late age of maturity and a slow reproduction rate, and adults normally live a very long time in the wild – up to 70 years for many individuals.
